Story
Slow Down is a song by The Beatles, written by Larry Williams and led on vocal by John Lennon. A cover of Williams’s 1958 rhythm-and-blues single, it was recorded on 1 June 1964 at EMI Studios, Studio Two, Abbey Road. Within the catalogue, its cover thread connects it to Anna (Go to Him), Chains, Boys; its Larry Williams thread connects it to Dizzy Miss Lizzy. The track was captured in six takes during a productive afternoon session that also produced Matchbox and I Call Your Name material. Three days later George Martin superimposed a piano track, and the mono mix was completed the same day for the Long Tall Sally EP release. John’s vocal delivery was characteristically forceful — Lewisohn describes it as “raucous and magnificently delivered.”
